Updated Means Test Numbers Effective November 1, 2011

As I explain here, in order to qualify for chapter 7, you have to pass the means test.  The means test looks at your average gross income for the last 6 months in order to calculate your yearly income.  If your yearly income is below the median yearly income for your family size, then you automatically qualify for chapter 7.  If not, then you move on to step 2 of the means test, which allows you to deduct certain monthly expenses.  The median family income has changed, effective November 1st.  The new numbers for California residents are lower than they were during the last year, and are as follows:

Family of 1: $47,683

Family of 2: $61,539

Family of 3: $66,050

Family of 4: $74,806

For each additional family member, add $7500
